Filler strip

Some funny things we saw in Poland:

  • Pierce Brosnan is on huge posters on buildings all over the country, advertising expensive men’s clothing.
  • Parking for choppers only — we have a photo.
  • The PWN bookshop — Mark has a photo.
  • There was an ad on TV for something related to eye care. We noticed that there was something oddly familiar about the eye chart. Inside joke, or clueless ad exec grabbing someting off Google Images? You decide.
  • There was something else that was funny. But I can’t remember.

Home, sweet home

Poland was very cool. There are many photos. We will upload the photos soon. Hodgestar has kept a sort of trip diary, which he is intending to post; I have been a lot more lazy.

The trip back was… exciting. I have no problem with flying (OK, except for very long flights, on which you spend hours inhaling other people’s bad breath), but I fucking despise airports. Warsaw airport was evacuated for half an hour while we were trying to check in, because some boob left his luggage unattended. Since nothing got blown up (disappointing!) and the evacuation only lasted half an hour, I assume they found the boob. Then we frantically had to transfer a few kilos of things that weren’t liquid from one suitcase to a carry-on bag, and run to get on our delayed flight (purchasing duty-free vodka was, naturally, out of the question, so we now have some completely useless foreign currency). Then we had to run to get on our connecting flight in Amsterdam. We had to remove our shoes (new 15-hole boots, too big and heavy to go in our check-in luggage, and thus worn on the way back) twice. Then a bored SA customs official warned us to declare our camera and laptop upon leaving the country in the future, lest they be assumed to be foreign imports, and confiscated.

We managed to smuggle through a large unpasteurized cheese, though, so there.

And now for something completely different: a bookmarklet for replacing newline characters with <br> tags throughout the page. It has made at least one site 87% more readable.

P.S. Polish politics is even funnier than ours. We need more satire. :/

Gdynia

Here we are in a hotel in Gdynia, mooching off the free wireless. (A country with non-crap internet! Hooray!) We are doing a whirlwind tour of some Teutonic castles and the Tricity. Earlier today we toured Malbork, which is huge and awesome. We have many photos, mostly taken by Hodgestar, who didn’t have to pay attention to the tour guide because he couldn’t understand him anyway. We even went to the top of the main tower.

Tomorrow we are going to walk around the Old Town in Gdańsk, and take a boat trip to Westerplatte.

Then we’re going back to Warsaw, and will probably just spend a few days hanging around, shopping
and visiting my family.

P.S. Mmmm, oscypek and pierogi!
